(0:03) You will hear a man telephoning to ask for information about swimming lessons. (0:10) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6 on page 2. (0:46) You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (0:50) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
(1:00) Hello City Swim School. (1:01) Oh, hello. I wanted to ask about swimming lessons.
That's in a class, not individual.
(1:09) Right. Well, we do group lessons at various levels.
(1:14) To start off with, we have what we call the Water Babies class. (1:21) The first class is called Water Babies. (1:25) So, babies has been written in the space.
(1:29) Now we shall begin. (1:32) You should answer the questions as you listen because you will not hear the recording a second time. (1:40) Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 6. (1:47) Hello City Swim School.
(1:49) Oh, hello. I wanted to ask about swimming lessons. That's in a class, not individual.
(1:56) Right. Well, we do group lessons at various levels. (2:00) To start off with, we have what we call the Water Babies class.
(2:05) That's for babies of three months and over. (2:08) Really? As young as that? (2:10) Yes, that's really the best time to start. (2:14) Right.
Well, we do have a baby, so I'll make a note of that.
(2:19) What do they actually do in the lessons? (2:22) Well, the main aim is just to familiarise them with the water so they feel at ease there. (2:27) They get the children to enjoy themselves.
(2:31) They have lots of toys and things they can use to play with in the water. (2:35) Right. And how much do the lessons cost? (2:39) They're held on Tuesday mornings and each lesson costs £3.80. (2:45) It's not really a course as such.
(2:48) OK. Well, I'll talk to my wife about that. (2:52) But I was actually ringing about lessons for me.
(2:56) OK. So, are you a beginner? (2:59) Not exactly, but I'm not very good. (3:02) Well, the beginners' classes are really for people who don't have any experience of swimming.
(3:08) They aim to teach you techniques for breathing in the water (3:11) and they get you to do things like put your head underwater and open your eyes. (3:16) OK. I can do that.
(3:19) And by the end of the course, they aim to have you swimming five metres. (3:23) I think I can probably just about do that. (3:28) OK.
So, you'd be better in the intermediate class then.
(3:32) That's where you learn the main swimming strokes. (3:36) Front stroke, back stroke and so on.
(3:39) What about diving? (3:41) Yes, they teach you how to do that. (3:44) And you'd also do some underwater swimming. (3:47) Not with a tank or anything? (3:48) Oh no, not scuba, just ordinary underwater swimming.
(3:54) And in the intermediate course, you also look at water safety, (3:59) both in the pool and when swimming in other places. (4:03) OK. Well, that sounds the right level for me, I think.
(4:07) So, how much does that cost? (4:10) £61 for a course. That's ten lessons. (4:14) Can you tell me a bit more about the class? (4:16) How many people would there be in it? (4:18) Well, the intermediate class is usually around eight to ten.
(4:22) That's what we aim at, though occasionally it might go up to twelve. (4:27) OK. That sounds quite a reasonable size, not too many.
(4:31) And the class is for adults, is it? (4:34) Yes. (4:35) OK. And just out of interest, is there an advanced class? (4:40) Yes.
They focus on developing more efficient swimming techniques
(4:44) and on working on your speed. (4:46) And they also prepare you for competitive swimming. (4:50) OK.
Now, I think I'd want to start with the intermediate one, really.
(4:58) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, (5:01) you have some time to look at questions seven to ten on page three. (5:26) Now listen and answer questions seven to ten.
(5:34) Now, is there anything special I need to know? (5:37) Well, the classes are on Tuesdays (5:40) and the first lesson is on January the 13th, (5:43) so you need to register before then. (5:46) January the 8th is the latest, but it's filling up quickly, (5:50) so I'd do it straight away. (5:52) You can pick up a form here or get one off the internet.
(5:56) And classes are at 7.30pm. (5:59) Right. Then I just roll up with my swimming trunks? (6:03) Do I have to bring my own towel? (6:04) That's right. We provide all participants with a swimming hat, though.
(6:10) Oh. I don't usually wear one. (6:12) Well, we do insist on it, actually.
(6:15) It helps the instructor to identify you, apart from anything else. (6:20) Oh, and don't forget you need a 20p coin for the locker. (6:23) Oh, OK.
Right. Well, I've been meaning to do this for ages.
(6:28) I really need to get some more exercise, (6:31) and everyone says swimming is good for your health.
(6:33) Yes, and a lot of people find it improves their confidence, too. (6:38) And, of course, it could save your life, or even someone else's. (6:42) That's right.
OK. Well, thanks very much. Goodbye.
(6:47) Goodbye. (6:51) That is the end of Section 1. (6:53) You now have half a minute to check your answers.
