(0:00) Now turn to Section 1. (0:08) Section 1. (0:10) You will hear a woman phoning a restaurant to book a room for a party. (0:15) First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5. (0:44) You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (0:48) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
(0:57) Good morning, Shaw's Restaurant. (0:58) Hi, I'd like to book one of your function rooms for a party, please. (1:03) Okay, fine.
How many people are you expecting for the party?
(1:08) Well, I'm not quite sure yet, but about 60. (1:14) There are about 60 people expected, so 60 has been written in the space. (1:21) Now we shall begin.
(1:23) You should answer the questions as you listen, (1:26) because you will not hear the recording a second time. (1:29) Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5. (1:36) Good morning, Shaw's Restaurant. (1:38) Hi, I'd like to book one of your function rooms for a party, please.
(1:43) Okay, fine. How many people are you expecting for the party? (1:47) Well, I'm not quite sure yet, but about 60. (1:51) Fine.
So you will need a big room. And what day were you thinking of?
(1:57) The party's for my daughter's birthday. It's her 21st.
(2:01) Her birthday's actually on the 17th of November, but that's a Friday, (2:06) so we thought we'd have her party on the 18th, as that's a Saturday. (2:10) There'll be lots of her friends there, as well as all the family. (2:14) And what time would you like the room for? (2:17) Oh, I'm not sure.
Uh, 7.45? Not too late.
(2:22) Okay. (2:23) And people will probably be leaving about 11.
(2:26) Fine. We're open until 11.30. (2:29) Excellent. And what about the menu? (2:33) So, do you want a sit-down meal with waiter service? (2:36) Yes, not a buffet.
(2:38) Right. Well, there are several options, including different menus at various prices. (2:45) So there's the standard menu.
That's 25 pounds per person.
(2:50) Okay. (2:51) Or the celebration menu, which is three courses.
It's very popular. That's 35 pounds.
(2:57) Okay.
I think I'd rather go with that.
(3:00) And there's also our gold menu. That's a five-course menu at 50 pounds.
(3:05) No, that's definitely too expensive. (3:08) Okay. (3:09) Now, not all the guests eat meat.
Will there be something for them?
(3:14) Of course. We'll make sure there's a vegetarian option for each course. (3:19) Great.
(3:20) And do you know if any of the guests have food allergies? Anything like shellfish, for example? (3:26) I'll need to check, but I do know that one of my daughter's friends is very allergic to strawberries. (3:33) Even just being near them can be a problem. (3:36) Okay.
I'll make a note to our chef to avoid those completely.
(3:41) Do you have any other requests for desserts? (3:43) Well, I'd like a choice if possible. And could we have cheese as well? (3:49) Of course.
No problem. We can provide that.
(3:55) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10.
(4:27) Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10. (4:33) Now, do you have any other requests I could help with? (4:37) What about after-dinner entertainment? You can book a band if you'd like live music. (4:42) Actually, I think a disco would be best if you can arrange that.
(4:47) No problem. (4:48) And I heard you might be able to put on a fireworks display. Is that possible? (4:54) We aren't offering that service anymore, I'm afraid.
It was just too expensive.
(4:59) Oh, I see. (5:01) Now, the menu package you've chosen includes a few other nice things.
(5:05) Oh, like what? (5:06) We'll decorate the room for you, which creates a nice party atmosphere. (5:11) We can use different colors for the balloons. Silver, gold... (5:15) She loves pink.
But actually, I think she'd prefer flowers to balloons,
(5:20) so let's go for them instead, in the same color. (5:23) No problem. Now, you mentioned that the party's for your daughter.
(5:28) We make birthday cakes if you'd like one. (5:30) Okay, yes. We'll definitely want a cake.
(5:33) And we can put a special message on top. What would you like? (5:38) Um, congratulations and then her name. That's Susie.
(5:42) Fine. (5:43) Now, one or two of the guests are coming by train, but they stop running quite early, (5:49) so they'll need a taxi to take them to the Forest Hotel after the party. (5:53) Is that something you can sort out? (5:56) Absolutely.
Anything else?
(5:58) I think that's all for now. (6:01) Okay. Well, just get in touch if you think of anything else.
(6:05) Now, if I can just take some contact details, I just need your name and phone number. (6:11) I'm Maria Nelson, and my number's 07749-132760. (6:19) Excellent.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
(6:26) That is the end of Section 1. You now have half a minute to check your answers.
