(0:00) for you to read the instructions and questions and you will have a chance to check your work. (0:07) All the recordings will be played once only. The test is in four sections.

(0:15) Write all your answers in the listening question booklet. (0:19) At the end of the test you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer (0:25) sheet. Now turn to section 1 on page 2 of your question booklet.

Section 1. (0:39) You will hear a telephone conversation between a man who works for a library service (0:45) and a woman who wants to join a library. First you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5 (0:53) on page 2. You will see that there is an example that has been done for you. (1:23) On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

(1:32) Good morning, library services. Oh, good morning. My family and I have (1:37) recently moved to the area and we'd like to find where our nearest library is.

We don't have a car. (1:43) Right, so whereabouts are you? In Perton, in the west. (1:48) Fine, so I'll just get the details on screen for you.

(1:54) The woman is asking about libraries in the west of the area, so west has been written in the space. (2:02) Now we shall begin. You should answer the questions as you listen, (2:08) because you will not hear the recording a second time.

(2:12) Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5. Good morning, library services. (2:22) Oh, good morning. My family and I have recently moved to the area (2:26) and we'd like to find where our nearest library is.

We don't have a car. (2:31) Right, so whereabouts are you? In Perton, in the west. (2:35) Fine, so I'll just get the details on screen for you.

(2:40) OK, your nearest one is the Minack Library. Minack. (2:45) Yes, in Skellen Street.

Can you spell that? (2:49) It's S-K-E-L-L-A-R-N Street. Got that. (2:59) It's very easy to find because it's beside a park.

(3:02) Oh, I think I know that area. There's a sports centre near there, isn't there? (3:06) I don't know of one. Oh, I'm probably mistaken.

(3:11) Anyway, it's probably a bit far for us to walk from home. Are there any buses? (3:15) Yes, it's well served by public transport. There's a stop about five minutes' walk away.

(3:21) Oh, right. And when does the library open? We'll most often want to come at the weekend. (3:28) I'm afraid it's not open on Sunday.

(3:31) Saturday? (3:32) Opens at 9 o'clock, closes at 4.30. We shut at 5 on weekdays. (3:38) That's fine. Now, I've got two kids, 14 and 9, (3:42) and I wondered whether you have any special activities for them.

(3:46) In our last place, we had an art club. (3:49) Well, the library does run a drama club, (3:51) but that would only be suitable for your younger child. It's open for 5 to 13-year-olds.

(3:57) A pity it's not open to both of them. Have you anything they could both go to? (4:02) Well, there's no reading club that would suit them both. (4:06) Oh, but there's a singing club that's held every second Saturday afternoon (4:10) for children of all ages up to 16.

(4:13) Excellent. (4:17) Before you hear the rest of the conversation, (4:20) you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10 on page 2. (4:50) Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10. (4:57) Now, because we're new to the area, I'm also wanting to get involved in local activities.

(5:03) Well, Minack does some sessions for adults as well. There's a book of the month club. (5:08) That's good.

(5:09) And I know that about once every 12 months, (5:12) they have a session where you can meet artists, you know, from the local area. (5:17) How interesting. Well, that sounds like a full programme.

(5:22) Now, while I'm on the phone, can I check what the facilities are? Can you take out CDs? (5:28) Not CDs, I'm afraid, but films, yes. (5:31) Right. I'll make a note of that.

(5:33) Anything else you need to know? (5:35) Oh, yes. We have 10 computers and we also stock several magazines, (5:40) including business, health care and hobbies. (5:43) Same as my last place.

(5:45) And there is a new drop-off facility where you can post any item through the door if it's after hours. (5:51) All you have to do is attach a note to it with the number on your card clearly written. (5:56) That sounds good.

(5:57) And we do have a small shop on the premises where we sell postcards. (6:02) We don't have many, but it's a popular service. (6:04) Oh, that's a good idea.

(6:06) They're very popular. (6:08) We also have an impressive range of maps of the surrounding area for sale. (6:12) Well, it sounds like you've got... (6:17) That is the end of section one.

(6:20) You now have half a minute to check your answers.
